Birth Story
Scarlett is such a natural Mama now!
She stayed by Colten's side all day long on Friday Feb 9th while I was at work with the signs of labor progressing. Colten decided to go for a run on the treadmill and she went to her kennel.
About 30 minutes later around 7pm, I got home from work and smelled a weird smell coming from the basement. I thought maybe the dogs had an accident. But upon inspection I noticed Scarlett's tail was wet (she was laying in her kennel). I thought she peed herself. Then when I looked closer I saw she had 2 little puppies with her! "OH CRAP," I thought!
We quickly rushed her up to the whelping pen and I assisted her delivering 6 more puppies. Around 3am things seemed to slow down so we decided she must be done and we went to bed.
At 6am I woke up to check on the puppies and was surprised to see that there were now 10 puppies total. I guess she had 2 more hiding in there. I was relieved to see that she knew what to do and they were nestled in with the others.
I had originally planned to name these puppies after Valentines Day things, or possibly the Taylor Swift/Super Bowl/Travis situation depending on the date of birth. But since she ended up delivering the puppies early, on the Eve and Day of the Chinese New Year, I felt it had more meaning to name them after the Chinese New Year Animals. I named them all mostly in order of birth, with the exception of 2. Perhaps there will be a connection between the personality traits of the puppies and their "animal sign" meaning.
